It’s a digital world we live in so it stands to reason that it should be a digital world we teach in, right? Well many of the teachers at our school try very hard to utilize technology every day. Teachers from all the core content areas as well as the electives are able to share a cart of Gateway laptops on wheels. However, we want very much to find funding for additional memory to install in them. If chosen for this purpose, your funding would reach well beyond just one class in this situation, as the carts are wheeled through the school where in one day’s worth of learning they could be used by up to 125 students a day! Multiply that over perhaps just 100 school days and you’ll be reaching 12,500 eager learners with this investment!

Teachers are not exaggerating when they use the word eager to describe a student with a laptop these days. This generation of students has always lived with the Internet and many of their parents have provided them with personal computers. Students who sit with eyes kind of like glazing over while looking at a textbook will suddenly come alive when laptops are available to them. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to collect data on this subject because the motivation is just absolutely visible in the classroom when they get a laptop in their hands. Students also develop skills using a laptop that are immediately transferable to many careers, no matter if they graduate or go on to college.

But although many of us teachers know how to use computers, nothing ruins a lesson plan more than a laptop that is sssssssssllllllllllooooooooowwwww or isn’t able to access many of the best software programs, load amazing pictures or videos, etc. Our students are savvy enough to know that laptops should work better than what we have to offer them this year. And can you imagine the frustration of a talented student who gets a laptop out only to have it fail while the person beside him/her is working on theirs okay? They get behind, give up, yipe and complain, all things teachers don’t really want to deal with given all the other goals we have.

We want the computer to work and to be fast, maybe not state of the art blazing fast, but the computer technicians that work with our district think that upgrading the laptop memory by 2 gigabytes would be great! For us non-technical people, that means taking off the back of the machine and switching out a ‘memory board’ from the original one to a newer one. Thank you for taking the time to review this application.
