Weekly Readers Literally

My students need 50 subscriptions to "Weekly Reader" magazine, one class video camera, and a compact flash memory card.

I teach 5th grade in a Title I, K-8 school. My students all receive free or reduced lunch and have very little access to technology or any supplies outside of the school system. They are at-risk students and come primarily from a low socio-economic background.

Our students are extremely interested in current events, animal science, and anything interesting and new. Weekly Reader magazines help our students get into the habit of keeping up to date by reading a highly engaging mini-magazine. The students have also wanted to have their own news channel and would like a way to read the Weekly Reader and report on it, like real reporters on Television.

Once students receive the supplies I am requesting, students will be able to read the Weekly Reader magazine and then create a news report once a week. At the end of the week, I will teach students how to record a newscast and I will broadcast it on the big screen with the use of the projector and computer I already have in the classroom.

This will be a great opportunity for my students to explore reading, writing, and producing through the eyes of journalists. Not only will this be a great motivator for students to read, but they will also be able to learn about a number of career choices which are related to journalism, writing, producing, and reading.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
