Creating Service Learners through Literature

My students need 35 copies of The Traveler's Gift by Andy Andrews to serve as the foundation for our focus on leading a purposeful, service driven life both in education and civic responsibility.

Many of the greatest minds throughout history have overcome personal struggles and diversity and emerged stronger for it. What guidance would iconic heroes like Abraham Lincoln, King Solomon, and Anne Frank give us in today's ever-changing world climate? My 8th grade, suburban students are passionate and caring, but need that extra spark and purpose to motivate them to take the steps toward becoming more active citizens and positive change agents.

The Traveler's Gift is the type of book that can truly inspire. My students often show an interest in changing their habits and reaching personal goals, but aren't sure how to get started.

I believe we can use the book's "Seven Decisions" as goalposts for our lives. This is the first year I am introducing the novel, so I need a class set to get started. After completing our novel study and related activities, I plan on reapplying the concepts and lingo as a way to fully incorporate the Seven Decisions throughout the rest of the school year and hopefully into students' attitudes.

Your donation will provide an opportunity for my students to find their greater purpose. It may become the first time they truly stopped and realized that they are the only ones who can control their actions. I believe this could be a major step toward establishing personal accountability and responsibility, two traits that are critical for students preparing to enter high school next year.
