Nobody reads anymore! You would be surprised how often I have heard or said those words. I am trying to encourage my senior high students from our small rural school into becoming lifelong readers through a new modern literature class. In this class I will cover various genres and authors in an effort to get students interested in reading.

A high percentage of our students fall in a low income bracket. They seem uninspired and apathetic towards their education. By encouraging students to read and learn I hope to spark an interest that can benefit them throughout their lives. However, with budget restraints it is difficult to get new books into the classroom.

I know that students will be interested in the novels The Road and Different Seasons. I have actually discussed a novel "wish list" with them, and they mentioned their interest in these novels. If one of these books makes a student want to pick up another book, this mission will be accomplished!

You could change a student's life by opening up the wonderful world of fiction. You will make it possible for students to become more involved in their education; therefore, more successful in their lives.
