Think back to your elementary school days. Did you have a love or hate relationship with the subject math?! I teach a multiple subject class of 5th graders, but by far the subject that they struggle the most with is math. My classroom is made up with regular education students as well as students with special needs.

Simply standing in front of my students reading lots of numbers will not inspire them to want to work with numbers. In my 5th grade class, my students are tested 4 times throughout the year for our district and state. I want math to be just as exciting as language arts, or science and history. My 9 and 10 year olds need to feel, touch and experience math to make it more experiential and exciting to learn.

Some of the most difficult 5th grade mathematical concepts are best learned kinesthetically. With the number line sliders, place value charts, percent/decimal/fraction sets, and graphing boards, my students will visually get to absorb the difficult number relationships that they will be tested on. When they take the 3 district benchmark tests and the big California state test, they will vividly remember learning these concepts because of the colorful math manipulatives they worked with.

You will make it possible for some of my students not to "fall through the cracks" and increase their love of learning about math and numbers. You have the chance to help my students increase their test scores and go from a score of basic to a score of proficient. With your help, you may help me teach some future engineers of America!
