"Chemistry for Young Women!

I teach in an inner city all girls public high school that has a math/science focus. This is our third year of existence and is the first year we are offering high school chemistry.

The school building we are in was formerly a junior high and the science department is well equipped for junior high science. Unfortunately, we have many needs before we can have an effective high school chemistry program. Because we are a school-within-a-school (yet at a separate location), our school's budget falls under our parent school. The fact that one school operates on two separate locations makes money tight. Couple that with huge district cuts this year, and we have no science budget. All equipment, consumables, and chemicals must be obtained through grants.

By looking through the lab experiments I expect us to complete this year, I made a list of all the equipment that we will need and do not yet have. This list includes basic lab equipment such as a scale that will weigh to 0.01 grams, side-arm flasks, pipets, Buchner funnels, volumetric flasks, and a distillation flask.

It is the goal of our school that all girls who choose, will have the opportunity to go to college and the skills to succeed there. It is essential that these girls have experience doing laboratory experiments that utilize these items.

My students need 7 Science laboratory supplies, including pipettes, flasks, an electronic balance and funnels.

Dear Paula A., Kathy, Portland Area SAS Employees, Catriona, Shanna, Catherine, Mr. Stuckwisch, Kitty, Sarah, Anna S King, Erin, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donor,
Wow! It brings me so much joy to see that so many people are pleased to give toward the education of young women. Your gifts are appreciated by me and my students. The equipment that you have purchased will increase the students' readiness for college laboratory sciences as well as raise the bar for the lab experiments we will be able to conduct in our classroom. This was a costly proposal and it is very exciting to have many generous people contribute to see it fully funded. I am so grateful! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

With gratitude,
Mrs. M.

"I used to attend Tubman back when it was co-ed and, honestly, not a very good school, and have fairly unpleasant memories of it...I was surprised and very pleased to learn that it has turned to this kind of emphasis on high achievement for girls. Science is awesome!"
Catriona from Portland, OR gave on Nov 21, 2009
"Thank you all so much! I can't tell you how exciting it is to see that our $1170 project is almost funded. For a short time, I thought maybe it would not be funded before the school year ended in June. Now I see that it will be funded and we will be receiving chemistry equipment very soon. I can't not thank you enough!"

"I gave to this project because I'm currently finishing up a Ph.D. in astrophysics with a focus on the chemical enrichment of the universe--all thanks to the encouragement I got from my awesome high school chemistry teacher and my introduction to scientific experimentation in our high school chem lab. I hope you and your students have as many great experiences together as my high school chem teacher and I had. Good luck and happy experimenting!"
