Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 4th grade class is a delightful group. I have 31 students from many cultures. Academically, their abilities currently range from far below grade level to above 4th grade level. Within this student population, I have students with special needs, English Learners who are struggling to learn English, and academically gifted students. It is MY challenge as their teacher to differentiate instruction so that California's state standards are addressed while I accommodate their ability levels. California has well-publicized financial difficulties. The main victims of these economic woes are the students. Like school districts throughout our state, my district, located in a predominately low income area of northern California, has had to prune its budget. In my school, one of the things that has been slashed due to budget cuts and contractual maintenance agreements is our copier 'allowance'. I am currently able to make class sets of handouts, but the usage of the machines that could be used for individual or small group copies has been restricted or totally eliminated. This makes meeting the diverse academic needs of my students difficult - if not impossible. The Canon Imageclass D340 would solve this problem! After each chapter test in math, I do an in-depth analysis of each students' performance for each numeracy skill. Then I prepare materials for remediation, additional practice, and enrichment for the students based on my analysis. I call this activity Math-Go-Round. I might need 4 copies of one activity, 10 copies of another, etc. Since these sheets may not be copied on the multiple copier, I am already limited in the number of times I can do this differentiated math instruction over the year. Students who are involved in cooperative research and cooperative learning would be able to copy their work for each member of their group. When working on writing with small groups of students, I could immediately share copies of successful works with the other group members so that they could have a copy 'in-hand' and learn from each other. What a powerful motivator and affective tool this would be! The Canon Imageclass D340 would not simply be a teacher's tool. It would be a learning facilitator accessible to students - who would be trained to use it properly and safely. By financing this proposal, you will be permitting my students and myself to seize the academic moment. You will facilitate the continuous, uninterrupted flow of differentiated learning in my classroom. Your donation of the Canon Imageclass D340 and its toner will give me the ability and flexibility to say to my students, "Copy that!!!!"
