Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school serves a low-income community where a quality elementary education is tragically difficult to attain. Ninety-three percent of our students receive free or reduced lunches. In my classroom, ninety-five percent of the students speak Spanish as a primary language. In 2007, my school received the National Distinguished Title I Award for its success in closing the achievement gap. Our motto of “College for Certain” imbues and informs every decision we make as educators. One of the primary challenges of working with English language learners is making academic content accessible. English language learners must devote their attention to simply understanding directions rather than the actual concept of the lesson. Clear visual presentations are essential in overcoming this obstacle. I am writing to ask you assistance in obtaining a powerful instructional tool. A document camera allows the user to project a live image with an LCD projector. It has virtually unlimited uses in the classroom. In Writing, the students can watch me write a story in real time and see how to use the margins of the paper. In Math, I can show the students how to use blocks to model a multiplication problem without worrying that several students will misunderstand oral directions such as “in the circle” and “outside the circle.” In Science, the students can visualize the process of erosion as they watch water carry away sand in a try. Right now, my school has a single document camera to share among eighteen classrooms. It is incredible to see a difficult task simplified by the use of the document camera. It is equally frustrating to see students struggle with a concept that could have been made comprehensible with the use of technology. My favorite application of the document camera is in our Writer’s Workshop, where students write and revise stories, ultimately “publishing” final versions. Students must constantly share their stories with others in order to develop a sense of purpose and audience. I have a student who has struggled to express himself in writing. For a while, he has disliked Writer’s Workshop and has not wanted to write anything. Recently, he published his first story of the year. Luckily, it was my day to use our school’s single document camera. I immediately called for the class to gather on the carpet. The student proudly presented his work as it was projected on the wall behind him. Now, the same student excitedly goes to his seat everyday to work on another story. Your donation can make such moments a regular occurrence.
