Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a class of about thirty second graders in a high-need urban community in Oregon. Many of my students speak languages other than English, and many families were hit hard by the economy long before the recession. My work is difficult but gratifying: these kids are ready to learn and make a difference in the world. To this end, I am seeking a set of sixteen small cassette recorders. These recorders will serve three crucial roles. First, my class will be able to have a viable listening/reading center. The range of reading ability is huge in my class and includes a number of below-grade readers. These struggling readers in particular need an opportunity to independently engage with text that is at or slightly above their level--I am not always able to give them this attention personally. The listening center will alleviate this difficulty and allow for smooth and efficient literacy work. Second, I work hard to build community in my class, both within my class and between my class and the broader community. One way I do this is to hook my students up with other adults in the building. My students write letters to staff throughout the year and begin to develop relationships. I want to push this idea along by giving my students the chance to interview staff. Considering their young age, the only way to effectively do this is for them to record simple interviews. This is not just a powerful literacy tool, but also a tremendous way to boost social skills and self-confidence: few second graders have appointments to interview the eighth grade science teacher! Finally, I have always wanted to do a family history project. Many families are reluctant to write out family information; however, many would be willing, I'm confident, to orally record information about their family. These recorders will go home with students for this purpose. These recordings can then become part of the listening center or the basis for a class book featuring the stories of the class families. While kids certainly know their families, there are undoubtedly many stories and pieces of information they don't know yet. This project will give the students much to think about as they come to understand themselves and others in the class much more deeply. For these reasons, I am seeking a set of cassette recorders. The benefits to my class range from self-confidence to self-understanding, increased compassion for others, a greater connection to school community, and a chance to improve reading and writing skills. I am excited by the educational prospects. Thank you for your consideration.
