Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade to a group of 26 students. My school faces the challenges of California state budget cuts. My students are very diverse. Some learning English as a second language, low socio-economic statues, gifted and talented, parents who are both working. Other have special needs and still others with many opportunities at home. There are 2 things they all have in common. They are eager learners and they are very very social (chatty). I want to have activities in the classroom that will keep them engaged and doing their work rather and getting off task and into trouble.
As you can imagine.... 26 to 1 is a difficult ratio. Keeping the kids on task is the ONLY way I'll be able to get through the massive amount of curriculum there is to cover in a year. I need to have centers around the room that relate to what we are learning in reading, social studies, math, and science. These need to be easy enough for the kids to do alone, but also fun enough to hold their attention for an hour.
I need to create a Math center where kids can practice their math facts in game-like ways. I has also requested materials to help them learn about the 7 continents and the cultures that flourish around the world. I have requested materials to help the kids read around the room. I have also asked for pointers- the kids LOVE these, but mine are broken and unsafe.
With the materials I have requested I will be able to engage the kids in learning- DISGUISED AS PLAYING. Research states that children learn best though play. With these materials the children will remain engaged allowing me to meet with small groups of children for individualized instruction.
