Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Where Are All The Books?

My students need repetitive text books, such as Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? and Eek! There's a Mouse in the House, to access literacy and access an opportunity to participate in the classroom.

Donor, Donor what do you see? How can it be! Donor, Donor what do you see? A classroom without books is what I see! I teach in a self-contained special education classroom with a focus on meeting the needs of children with Autism. The students at my school face the challenge of growing up in a low-income neighborhood. About 70% of the school is receives free lunch.

My students need materials to address their literacy needs. When working with a population of high need students on the Autism Spectrum, repetition, predictability and predictive events are crucial to their success. While this is true in setting up routines and the environment, it is also imperative for grasping comprehension in literacy.

We need predictive text books that repeat the main phrase or sequence so that all of the essential elements of the story are consistent and the facts stand out. Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see? by Eric Carle is a wonderful example of a repetitive text book that my students are able to participate, comprehend and access. We need to gain access to a source of predictive text books, so that the students can access, comprehend and communicate their understanding. The books are also wonderful to grant access to non-verbal students who can participate with a communication device and join in to let their voice be heard every time the repetitive portion of the story starts.

This project is very important to me and your help will aid in my students accessing literacy. I want to give my students the materials necessary so that they can access books, literature and gain the skills necessary to begin comprehending and participating in class.
