To most students what lies beneath their skin is a complete mystery. I am a biologist turned 7th grade science teacher, and because of my education background I really enjoy our nine weeks spend on the human body. My school is quite diverse, with over 30 nationalities represented. Demographically my students are some of the poorest in the county and have sad home stories. Since I can not take them all home and care for them myself, I have pledged that I will do my best to foster an interest in education, and a love for the world around them.

I feel that it is my responsibility as their teacher to not only teach them what each body system is responsible for, but also how it interacts with the others, and how everything we do affects the health of our body. I can show students posters and images of color coded organs, but it is not real to them. It is just not believable to the students that those yellow, green, red and pink organs are inside of them and other living creatures.

Last year I was lucky enough to get my hands on a preserved cat. I thought for sure that the students would be disgusted and turned off by what they were seeing, but wow was I wrong! My students put on gloves and dived right into the specimen that I had dissected for them! The questions were flying and their enthusiasm was unprecedented! Having the proper resources such as preserved organs, cats, dissection tools and models would help to foster this enthusiasm from day one of our human body adventure.

Your donation will ensure that my students will be exposed to a once in a life time opportunity! Together we can try to inspire these students to have more respect for their bodies, and possibly make life time commitments to a health care profession! Lets give these children a shot at the future!
