Motivating reluctant writers is one of my passions as well as a challenge in my classroom and school. I am a special education teacher, spanning multiple grade levels, in a high-need school district in rural Oklahoma.

Often, many of my students will sit and stare at a piece of paper, while other students are busily writing their daily journals and essays. All of my students face different learning challenges which affect their daily performance and ability to write. Eventhough they have wonderful imaginations and experiences to share, they are reluctant to write for many reasons. Some have poor or slow handwriting, others are not able to spell, and some are hindered by proper grammar. These are just some of the challenges that my students face everyday in their classes.

Research has shown that technology helps motivate students to learn and create. Traditional paper and pencil projects are being replaced by blogging and social networking to empower our reluctant writers to learn and create in the digital age. There are many ways that the iPod touch can help facilitate teaching and learning to students with special needs. This technology offers "apps" to download such as dictionaries, spell checkers, flash cards, and writing and organizational tools.

Your contribution to this project will benefit my students to be more motivated to participate in writing projects and make a difference in the lives of students with special needs to succeed in the classroom and in life.
