Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach the first grade in a low socio-economic area. Many of my students are bilingual and from families whose parents speak only Spanish. The parents often work late into the evening and cannot provide the interest in reading that these children should be given.

My students do not have quality literature to read at home and their parents are unable to take the children to the public library. I feel it is my duty as a teacher to open up the world of books to my students. I do this by introducing high-quality literature through author studies. I visit three libraries in the area to acquire enough copies of several books by one author to do an author study. I am able to meet the reading levels of all my students in this way.

I read a story to my class about Wemberly written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes. I am always impressed with authors who have the talent of being able to write and illustrate outstanding children's books. I choose authors like Kevin Henkes to hook my students into wanting to read, read, read. After reading a story of Wemberly, my students were hooked indeed.

Would you assist me in acquiring a collection of Kevin Henkes books that could be kept in my classroom? Try to visualize the looks on these precious children when I tell them that we will have the books for the entire school year and not just the few weeks from the public library.
