When I became the 7th-9th grade Language Arts teacher at our small charter school, little did I know I was also becoming the librarian.

When I began building a library, I looked over the donated non-fiction section with some chagrin. There were a lot of holes between "Discovering Britain" and "The Book of the American West." Not surprisingly, the money ran out quickly and I was left with about one shelf of books distributed to six shelves to form some sort of non-fiction section. I had to heavily supplement with dictionaries and fiction to keep it from looking totally pitiful. Now we're trying to research papers and presentations with a few computers and some random discards.

The requested books would allow us do some real research and I would be able to teach my students how to use a non-fiction section that has more than a thesaurus and some biographies. I also believe in the literacy gained by looking up something in print versus doing a Google search. Students can additionally learn how to cite these sources, a valuable tool for the rest of their educational experience.

Your donation would allow students to dive into books and produce reports that sound richer than a cut and pasted Internet hodge-podge. Not to mention, the Dewey Decimal System will live again!
