Philadelphia, PA Grades 3-5

I am an inner-city school writing teacher for students in grades K-6. The majority of my students are not provided with the positive life experiences that many children receive; which, as we know, builds background knowledge and makes for well-rounded, productive, and successful students. The majority of these students read and write well below their grade level. A large percentage of them either do not live with their biological parents or come from one parent households. I have students who have already been exposed to more violence and abuse in their lives than most of us adults, thankfully, will ever experience. I do not have my own classroom; rather I travel from classroom to classroom, floor to floor, building to building. Therefore, I am requesting a small, portable LCD projector that will provide me with the key to unlock the universe, to show my students’ life’s possibilities. This school currently has one LCD projector but it is not available for classroom use. Last year, I was able to borrow an LCD projector from a friend. I showed numerous thought provoking downloads. These included Dr. M. L. King, Jr’s. “I Have a Dream Speech,” his marches, and Robert Kennedy announcing Dr. King's assassination to Americans and the world. We also watched a live interview with Rosa Parks and the then Senator of Illinois, Barack Obama, speak of the hope and courage Rosa Parks has given our nation. Further, I was able expose my students to the arts, interviews with artists, show academic mini lessons, and so much more. I tell you this because after watching these downloads my students actually asked me if they could write about what they had seen. Could they write about it?! This experience had sparked an enthusiasm in my students that I had never before seen. They were hungry for more. They asked questions. They had been able to witness events in history and see the arts come to life, and they understood. My students' curiosity for learning reached such a high that their productivity went up and their participation was so exhilarating that Dr. M. L. King, Jr. himself must have felt their positive energy. The results: I had the lowest performing 5th grader students at the beginning of the school year. However, they turned this around and their PSSA scores were amazing! 3 scored Advanced in all 3 academic areas; 11 scored Proficient in all 3 academic areas; 5 scored Proficient in 2 academic areas; and all but 3 of the remaining students moved up toward Proficient. Thus, experience has proven to me that when students are presented with visually, auditorily, and cognitively stimulating media, they become self-motivated to write, to evaluate, to reason, and to draw conclusions about what they have experienced. They develop higher level thinking skills and a hunger for learning. This LCD projector will allow me to rocket my students into the 21st Century. It will enable me to expose students to the world they live in, its history, its perils, its joys, its awesome world of the arts and sciences, its universe, and the endless possibilities it holds for them. This technological life-lens will open up a world that will inspire students to become positive members of our society now and in the future. Right now, their academic world is locked inside textbooks, which they cannot yet understand, or inside boring printed black and white copied papers. So, if you should come across this proposal, your help in attaining its fulfillment will be greatly appreciated. I want you to know that I am not just asking for a handout; I too have already spent over $1,000 on items to enhance my students’ learning. I appreciate your consideration, time, and financial support. I know you can donate to anyone you wish. If you choose to fund this proposal, you will have helped a struggling inner-city teacher motivate students in grades K through 6 to reach their potential, this year and for many more to come--a key to unlock a door on their journey to success.
