Please help me build a bridge that enables my students to enjoy a book that will be both educational and interesting: BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. My school is currently considered "at-risk" by the state standards in Language Arts, the subject I began teaching this August. I have found that my students (the 8th graders here) have little to NO interest in reading. My hope is to furnish them with a book that will peak their interest by being relatable.

After a recent survey I completed with my Language Arts classes, I realized that so many of my students have suffered great losses in their lives. They, at their young ages of 11, 12, and 13 have already seen the death of friends and family. A great number of them fail to see the value of literature because they have yet to ever really connect with a book. I believe that BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA will be relatable, thus, help them to appreciate its purpose as a literary work as it deals with the death of the protagonist's closest friend. It is a story of love and loss that I believe will capture their compassion.

I plan to use BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA to not only demonstrate the powerful emotion of a novel, but also to teach literary elements. The characterization, for instance, in this novel is ideal teaching to this grade level.

With your help, my students will be able to enjoy this literary work and share the experience as a class. Thank you for your kindness and consideration.
