High-need 8th grade students in need of classroom sets of books for a Civil War novel study and paired book study. Reading has become popular at our school this year due to our new literature circle groups. Our students are absolutely saturating the day with reading- reading for fun- and not just classroom assignments!
These students live in a community where money is always an issue. Our school district does not have the funds to provide the books these students need to develop a love for reading, and our teachers have spent hundreds of dollars out of pocket to get them the books they are using now. We have used the funds we were given to the best of our ability to purchase the materials and books these students are using now. Our students are excited about reading comprehension and finding ways to connect literature to themselves, the world and other media. Our state standards have changed this year, adding a more comprehensive, vigorous set of standards...which means the workload for present and future students just became heavier. We can help lighten that load when we make learning fun and enjoyable!
By integrating literature that ties to other subject areas, we can make reading seem more fun and interesting while we tie it to real-life situations! These books will add flavor and depth to what these students learn in language arts AND social studies now and in the future!
Your help will make it possible for these students to explore a different realm of reading! The purchase of these books will spark classroom discussions beyond our imaginations and inspire a lifetime of learning for a whole new generation of students! Not only will the students in my 8th grade class benefit but my future 8th graders will too! Putting these books in the hands of my students opens up possibility and opportunity for lifetime learning through reading.
