Student Film Festival

Our school is located in a rural, impoverished area of Alabama. Many of our students have untapped artistic ability. Our school is thrilled, therefore, to have had the opportunity to be a part of our state's Arts Education Initiative program. For the last three years, our faculty and students have received training and developed projects in music, graphic art, visual art, and drama. This is our last year to receive grant money to support our arts program.

Our grant guidelines require us to develop means of sustainability of funds to ensure our programs continue after state funding ceases. Donors Choose is an excellent resource to secure additional funding of our programs. This year the Tiger Arts Guild (TAG), a student arts advocacy group, plans to sponsor a student film festival. Students will script, film, perform, and edit their entries. The project is student driven with the faculty as facilitators.

Our students need this state-of-the-art computer in order to produce films for the student film festival. Pinnacle film editing software was purchased with Arts Education Initiative funds and will be installed on computers for students to use in editing their films. Teachers will attend a professional development session training them on the use of the software. Additional computers capable of running video-production software are needed to accommodate the number of students involved in the film festival and to insure every student has equal access to the software. The computers will also be utilized for public viewing during the competition. These computers will be operated in the DHS library under faculty supervision and will be available to all students during school hours. Additional time after school may be granted providing trained faculty is present. Students' work will be evaluated by a faculty panel and selected entries will premier at the Tiger Arts Guild Film Festival to be held in the school's auditorium in April 2010. An awards ceremony will follow after the festival. Awards will be given in the categories of directing, editing, screen writing, cinematography, and acting. The festival will be open to the entire community.

The festival will be publicized through local media and a student-run publicity campaign. Proceeds from the festival will support future arts integrated curriculum projects and events sponsored by TAG. In addition, computer equipment will remain in the library for daily research and for use in future art/graphic design projects.
