"The school where I teach is very diverse and has lots of kids who love learning! My school has many students who come from low income families so my school is considered a Title 1 school. I am the science teacher at the school so I teach all of the students from kindergarten through fifth grade. That's 750 students a week! Since I do not get funding from my school district for supplies, I rely on the school, PTA, parents, and the community for my supplies.
A problem at my school that I would like to resolve is that recycling is not utilized as much as it could be. I believe that the reason recycling is not utilized as much as it should be is because all of the students have not been fully educated about the importance of recycling. My solution to this problem is to educate the students about the importance of recycling. After the students have been educated, the school will participate in a "Recycling Challenge." Each classroom will be competing against the other classrooms in the school to see which class can recycle the most materials per quarter. Each week one class per grade level will walk around the school with me to collect their grade level's recycling bins. The students in the class will then weigh the bins to determine how much each class recycled that week. After the recyclables have been weighed, the students will help me carry the recyclables outside to the recycling receptacle. The weight for each class' recyclables will be posted for the rest of the school to see. At the end of the quarter, the weights for the quarter will be tallied and the class with the largest weight (i.e. the class that recycled the most) will receive one of the requested prizes. These prizes are made from recycled materials (e.g.- pencils made from recycled newspaper, etc) so that students will understand what their recyclables can be used to make. I believe the "Recycling Challenge" will educate students about recycling and motivate them to recycle. I also feel like providing the requested prizes, which are made from recycled materials, will help the students understand what the items that they are recycling can be used to make and how important it is to buy things made from recycled materials. The future is in our students' hands. It is our job to teach our students the importance of recycling. I believe that an activity such as the "Recycling Challenge" is a way to both educate and motivate kids to recycle. Hopefully this information will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
Thanks for your consideration. HIDE My students will be participating in a Recycling Challenge. The class that recycles the most will be rewarded with a prize. These prizes are made from recycled materials. The prizes are: 100 recycled cookie wrapper pencil holders, 50 recycled juice pouch pencil pouches, and 150 recycled newspaper pencils.
