I teach an inquisitive and creative group of children in grades 1,2, and 3. They have a diagnosis of High Functioning Autism and have a zest for learning science. If they could choose anything to study about, it would be in the area of science. They LOVE it!

Have you ever seen a child's face light up at seeing a newly decorated classroom at the beginning of the school year? Well, I have and it made saying good bye to summer very easy. To start the school year off, I put up a new bulletin board about the solar system. WOW! I saw faces light up and the questions started flying. "Are we learning about planets this year?", "Do we get to read about the stars?" "That's awesome!" So I knew right then and there where teaching science would lead me this year!

As a teacher in a special education classroom, I usually get "what's left over" when it comes to any science materials that come to the school. I would love to provide my students with new, "cool", and very deserving science materials with a focus on our Solar System. It would be beneficial for them to be able to manipulate planet models with a simulator, hands-on solar system experiments, as well as games and puzzles to reinforce what concepts they have learned. Having the diagnosis of Autism means understanding difficult concepts with the aide of visuals and being able to experience learning, not just reading about planets and stars.

With your generous help, you will be able to provide my classroom, and students for many years, with the needed materials for learning about the world and galaxy around us. You will be able to assist me as a classroom teacher in expanding imaginations and enabling children who often struggle with reading and math, to learn about something they truly enjoy...space, planets, and stars!
