We touch, we smell, we hear, we really shouldn't taste but we can see the surroundings on our nature trail change each season. I teach a class of twenty, four year old boys and girls that are excited about everything around them. We have a wonderful old school that was built in 1940 and has a wonderful history but we do live in a high-need community. Many of my students qualify for Free lunches and come form single parent homes or live with grandparents, but that does not mean that their families don't want them to experience everything and learn everything they can.

Each year a teacher's class takes on a whole different personality. This year my class can't get enough about bugs, leaves, acorns, seeds, weeds, flowers, birds and bees. Well, the birds and bees part is just limited to the ones in nature, not the ones we try to get the high schoolers to control. My students love to ask questions, draw pictures and dictate to me what they saw but at this age, the end product is not nearly as important to the student as the process of the drawing. I would like to help the students by seeing the actually photos we could take throughout the year.

A quality digital camera in the hands of a four year old will be like a brush in the hands of Monet. We will have the photos to visually illustrate our journey through nature and seasonal changes.

The children will have a visual journal of all sorts of learning situations including the one that I have explained to you here today. A gift of a quality camera and photopaper will be used many times through the school year and not just once for one individual project.
