Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever heard the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words?" Well if that is the case, then a hands-on math manipulative is worth a million!!! That’s right, a million words. That’s why Math + Manipulatives = Magic! I know this from experience. I am a third grade classroom teacher in the great state of Oklahoma. I have been working for the last two years at a Title One school with a lot of hard working, medium to low-income families; and they want to learn!

Except, I have a problem right now. I have a class full of kinesthetic learners. They learn better when they have something to hold, arrange, manipulate, or investigate; and I don’t have enough of those types of manipulatives in my classroom. From time to time, we have created our own manipulatives, but it takes time away from students’ learning and they usually are not heavy duty enough to reuse. So the next year we jump through the same hoops.

Here’s where your help comes into play! With your donation, I can get a variety of math manipulatives for my students. Remember how I said, “a math manipulative is worth a million words?" Well, I can give lesson over lesson on place value, talk about how ten ones are the same thing as one ten and a student may still struggle with the concept. However, if I give that same student place value cards, cubes or some of the manipulatives in the Math Manipulative Library, they will be able to explore the relationships and come to a conclusion on their own; the manipulatives did the “talking” and the student did the learning. These manipulatives would be a magnificent teaching resource to have in my classroom for my hands-on learners!

Your donation will ensure a little bit of magic in the lives of my students; gifting the hands-on learning materials that some students need in order to be successful. Not only will they help a student grasp math concepts, it will also build their self-confidence! With more confidence comes more success and hopefully a lifelong desire to learn. To see a glimmer in a struggling student’s eyes, when he finally gets it, now that is magic!
