The majority of our special education students are in grades 3-5. We are a public school within a supportive community.
We started a school-wide post office three years ago. My students have a wide range of skills and needs. Although the students are interested in the school post office, they are not understanding the significance of a post office beyond our building or beyond this school year. Our school runs its own postal system called Colt Express. Students serve as post masters and mail carriers. Each classroom and office has its own 'street address' and students and staff write letters to each other. Mail is picked up and delivered in the mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students participate in our post office by picking mail up, sorting it, and delivering it.
Writing letters is obviously a real world skill we want our students to have and this gives them an opportunity to write to other community members for authentic purposes. We even have our own stamps that must be used (the stamps are provided at no charge).
Parents are encouraged to write letters to their children throughout the year and put them in our big grey mailbox in the front hallway of the building. All letters, notes and cards sent through our school post office must have a complete address, return address and a stamp. Our Nixie Clerks will mark all others “Return to Sender.” These supplies will enable our students to gain a better understanding of how the post office works. Many of these books describe the particular jobs available at the post office and how to get those jobs. In addition, these supplies will allow the students to continue printing our own school stamps on labels to distribute to classrooms. HIDE My students need 17 book titles and supplies that will help them understand the purpose of the school post office which we run.
