My colleagues and I teach in a low-income, high-need charter school in Ohio. We teach a very diverse group of middle school students. Our charter is based on creating an effective learning environment that is geared toward preparing our children for college. We strive for excellence to provide every opportunity for our children to succeed. We have shown much growth the past few years, but it is becoming difficult to keep up with the pace of technology when funds are tight.

Our charter school students have shows much progress every year on the Ohio Achievement Tests. Last year, we did not have enough calculators for all of our students to use on the mathematics portion of the test in the middle school. They worked so hard all year long and then felt very defeated when they realized they didn't have a calculator to use on the OAT test. We did not have sufficient funds to provide our students with calculators. Our children come from difficult backgrounds so providing them with an education, especially a strong math education, will help them go far in life.

To give my students the opportunity for success on the OAT, I need to provide them with all of the tools they need. Throughout the year we work on problem solving strategies, formulas, basic operations, geometry, exponents, and many other areas of math. My students can perform all of these skills without a calculator, but given the 2 hours time limit, don't stand a fighting chance to win! Providing us with calculators will allow us to practice and feel confident when it comes to testing time.

Your support will help ensure that my students are comfortable while testing. You will help create the best-fit environment because they are confident that they do well. I want to provide a learning environment where they don't feel afraid to show what they know and you will be a huge part of that! In math, students don't rely on many technical objects, but calculators are one. Receiving a gift of this magnitude will help further the education and help provide an opportunity to them that they would not otherwise receive.
