How many of you remember the arduous, daunting task of learning to write your first story or report? Well, I do and I vowed that when I became a teacher, I would NEVER, EVER teach writing like the teachers of yesteryear! So now that I am a third grade teacher, my vow to self has now become reality as I find new and creative ways to inspire my eight- and nine-year-old writers!

"I don't know what to write about!" is a common response when teaching writing to third graders. Nothing is more daunting then seeing the reluctant writer laying on his or her desk, tapping their pencil, staring at the ceiling and saying those dreaded words. I had to find a way to motivate and inspire these kids to write! Especially given the fact that they would be taking the state writing exam the next year and would be required to be proficient in writing. But how?

So I asked myself, "What do students like to do most when writing a story, poem or report?" And the answer was glaringly obvious. The pictures! So I decided to combine the lost art of art into my writing curriculum. Instead of drawing the illustrations or creating the art second to writing, I began by focusing and teaching an artistic concept and incorporating that artistic concept into the writing. Along with the concept, I began to explore the many different art mediums available to my students. Paints, oil pastels, paper, colored pencils and crayons were readily available, but it was the one set of Prismacolors that I shared with my class that truly inspired them. Their art came to life and they were excited. And to my pleasant surprise, their writing came to life too. And the dreaded phrase, "I don't know what to write" gave way to "Please can we have more time to write". I had hooked the fish, now I just needed to set that hook.

Please help me set the hook with my students. They're inspired and motivated, now I just need the Prismacolors to keep them inspired and moving forward in their writing. Not only for this class but for many classes to come.
