This project is truly from trash to treasure. The students begin the project with disgust at the thought of wearing "trash" but as the project progresses they are all clamoring for the opportunity to be the model. I teach approximately 160 sixth graders at a Title I middle school with a highly migrant population.

Many of my parents do not speak English or do not have the financial means to send in extra supplies. Every year I send out a wish list of supplies and will receive only a handful of donations out of my 160+ students. Some students even find it hard to find the recycled items because their family turns in the cans, bottles and metal items for extra cash.

The project requires students to work in groups and create a costume for a childhood character. The students learn about costuming, but more importantly about team work, collaboration and innovation. It also brings yet another opportunity to emphasize the importance of the environment and unique opportunities for recycling and reusing. I am able to collect recyclables from family, friends and the school. We need help providing the adhesives (which do not have to be recycled) like duct tape and twine. We also need heavy duty scissors, because the kind that we can get from parents often end up broken and unusable because of the uniqueness of the materials we use. The students are allowed one trashbag made from recycled materials to create a base for their design and all the recycled material they can collect. I have had students use everything from old CD's to dryer vents. The students also create design boards on poster board which reflect the process they went through to create their costumes, which we display at our "runway show".

Your help will provide my students with this unique opportunity. Every year on the final exam, I ask my students which project/performance was their favorite and I hear this project more often than any other. I also ask which project taught them the most and this project tops that list as well. Please help me to provide this amazing opportunity to my students.
