"I'm encouraging the students in my rural, somewhat isolated school to think outside the box and push themselves to increase their writing abilities while exploring diversity. My Indiana school is located in an extremely small town where most of the students don't get the chance to interact with the larger world around them. While we are working hard to increase student achievement, there is a pervasive culture of accepting mediocrity and not embracing new or diverse ideas.

For the past two years, I have taught "The Freedom Writers Diary" in sophomore English, and my students are inspired by it. This year I have implemented a writing workshop approach to go along with the novel, and my students are exploring the written word every day. I've actually had kids disappointed when it was time to stop writing. Currently, we are limited in our funding and classroom novel selections. My students have expressed an interest in reading the novels that Erin Gruwell taught her students in "The Freedom Writers," and I think that the opportunity for them to explore larger issues of freedom throughout the world as expressed by three different authors' viewpoints will provide revelations for them.

I need copies of three novels - "Night," "Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl," and "Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo," for literature circle groups in my classroom. Students will be able to explore novels discussed in "The Freedom Writers' Diary," while learning more about diverse cultures, the price paid for freedom, and tolerance for others' ideas. My students will gain a sense of the larger world around them and learn that the price for freedom is often very high. I hope that the novels serve as a springboard to empower students to challenge their own narrow viewpoints and write from the heart.

Your help will provide my students with the opportunity to explore more literature and increase their writing skills but most importantly will put them on the path to being better citizens of the world. HIDE

My students need 16 copies each of three different book titles - "Night", "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl", and "Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo". The cost of this proposal is $542, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."
