The Self Expression of Self Portraits

My students first need a digital camera to capture their facial image. Then they will need watercolor paper and acrylic paint to recreate their portrait in a monochromatic color scheme.

Thank you for taking the time to review my proposal! I teach visual art in a class 5A school in south central Oklahoma. Our student population consists of a diverse variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds including, Afro-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American. We have a high number of students who are on free/reduced lunch.

Middle school students love to be able to draw a face but struggle with making it resemble their subject. Drawing from a live model is very challenging and frustrating for middle school students. This project will allow students to explore facial proportion, and produce a large, colorful, self-expressive self portrait. A digital photograph of the student will be taken as reference for the self portrait. The students will draw the photo using the grid method and try to isolate any dark value areas by outlining it lightly. They will outline any values much like a “paint by number” drawing. Finally, after blending one color of paint with white and black to give a variety of value changes, the student will paint the portrait.

Having a digital camera to use in the classroom will give each student a flat image of their face to draw in order to ensure success. Students will also have the opportunity to use mathematics skills to enlarge their image using a grid. The students will be so excited about painting they won't realize they are using math too!

Your generous donation will make it possible for 135 students to tap into their own creative juices. By supplying my students with the digital resources and art supplies each one of my students will have a higher chance of success. Who knows, you could possibly be the first art patron for the world's next Picasso!
