Can you remember the first time you dissected an animal? For me, it was a shark in my fifth grade science class. These types of experiences can make a child curious about science and develop a desire to follow a science career path. I teach zoology to juniors and seniors in high school. In my class, we take care of bearded dragons, a gecko, and snake. They can learn about these animals' behaviors and lifestyles, but not how their internal systems work. Dissections are what can help these zoology students learn more about animals.

A child can look at a squid in a book and name the differences between a lion and the squid. But when that child does hands-on dissections of squid, along with other animals, they can name similarities and differences the squid has with many animals, even humans! They can understand how the body functions. Our school can not afford to provide our young adults with theses experiences. But we can not afford for them to not experience science.

Do all students think that starfish and sponges play a vital role in the world? Not at all. But having hands-on experiences and inquiry-based labs with animals can have a huge impact on their understanding of animals and how their bodies function. My students are filled with questions about how animals eat, digest, reproduce, and function. They will be able to see this with their own eyes when they dissect animals and study the internal and external systems. In order for this to happen, we need 6 AP Biology Animal diversity Sets and 1 Comparative Animal Dissection Kit.

Now, more than ever, our society needs young adults taking an interest in science, the environment, and medical fields. They are our future researchers, doctors, and veterinarians. Without your help, I will not be able to let these young adults experience hands-on science dissections. You can play a vital role in helping a young adult develop their love for science.
