"Every week, over 700 excited K-4 elementary students eagerly come to my music classroom.
Our school is located in a very rural community. For most students, my music class is the only time they will be exposed to singing, dancing, composers, and what they love the most - INSTRUMENTS!
This year, I would like to begin a special drumming curriculum which not only involves drumsticks and pads, but also some wild choreography and cymbals for the grand finale.
I have noticed that many children become self-conscious about singing as they get older. In addition to musical skills, I believe that being in this percussion group will improve their self esteem and develop group cooperation for a common goal.
Crash cymbals would add so much to a dynamic drummer group. These instruments also develop improved steady beat and working with meters and downbeats. It will also take cooperation and teamwork to add these percussion instruments into the ensemble.
Music can make a difference in our lives - and so can you. Your contributions will enable a greater number of life-changing opportunities.
We need your CASH for CRASH Cymbals!
My students need 2 pairs of small crash cymbals, 2 pairs of cymbal handles, and 2 cymbal storage bags.
I am continually amazed at the generosity of people who support the arts and who feel the need to encourage teachers and students alike. The minute that my students saw me carrying the boxes to my room, they had the biggest smile on their faces and shouted joyfully, "Is that our new cymbals?" I have begun a new drumming curriculum with about 250 3rd and 4th graders and the crash cymbals add the perfect touch. I haven't even told the high school band director that we are now the proud owners of 14 inch cymbals AND storage bags..I'm afraid he'll be jealous and want to use them at HIS school! I'm so pleased that some of my "reluctant" students are now excited and motivated to come to music class. The students are looking forward to working on their own special projects to share in their annual talent show. My sincere thanks again for your generosity and encouragement.
With gratitude, Mrs. L.
Mrs. L. sent this note after the project was fully funded:
What a great birthday surprise to find out that my cymbal project has been funded. It always amazes me how generous people can be that don't even know our students. The cymbals will be a terrific addition to our new drumming curriculum. I have several students who have difficulties in excelling in academics but know they have to get their classwork done in order to come to music class. This will serve as another mode of motivation for them. Thank you again for your generosity.
With gratitude, Mrs. L.
On Jan 20, 2010, Mrs. L. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
"Dear Lindsay and Jess,
It is so terrific that both of you have donated to this project. The kids are really looking forward to some shiny cymbals. Thank you for your help. Are you drummers?"

"Dear Katherine,
Thanks for your donation. I'm so glad you're you're a strong believer in music ed. Too bad everyone doesn't feel that way. Many administrators feel that it is just "fluff". Thanks for your support."
