Inspiration comes in many forms! Gifted students need real life heroes they can look up to while setting goals for their own lives. I teach gifted and talented students in second grade through fifth grade. I currently have a total of 50 students at my center, with the majority of them in fifth grade. My students come from nine schools located in the district. Even though my school district has 60% of students on free/reduced lunch, I see bright sparks of motivation and determination to become someone who will have an impact on society and the world.

I truly believe my class is enriched by children who will one day change the world through scientific research, best selling novels and leadership. By reading the book Gifted Hands by Ben Carson, I hope to help my students see that they can reach their goals and realize their dreams. Ben Carson is known throughout the world for his breakthroughs in neurosurgery. In his book, he tells of a childhood in the inner city where he learned how to study. Ben Carson made a connection between reading and achieving in school. Gifted students are not always achievers, even though they have the intelligence. Sometimes gifted students hide their abilities in order to fit in with their peers. I want to inspire my students to chase their dreams, with a little help from Ben Carson. After the students are finished reading, I would also like to use these same books to lead an afterschool parent book study so that the parents of my students may understand a little more about what being gifted means for their child (affective education).

I believe that by teaching a book study about a real person who has worked hard and achieved so much, I can motivate my students to dream BIG and accomplish their goals!

Please help my students realize that one person can make a difference, and that one person can be themselves.
