Don't you like variety when you shop? My ESL and general education kindergarteners want the same when they shop for just right readers for their book bags. Having many choices of books will promote the interest and desire to read. They will never know they are practicing fluency and comprehension skills!
Many of my students did not believe they could or ever would be able to read. They proved themselves wrong and now they want to read everything in sight. The problem: not enough books! They currently have book bags which hold only three books of my choice. I have to choose the books in order to keep inventory and rotate them.
The idea: Kids will want to practice reading when they have an actual interest in what they are reading. I want to give the children a choice of at least five books on their reading level to fill their book bags. They will "shop" for books to go into their book bag for the week. They, also, will be able to access these books throughout the day and, in turn, practice reading skills all day long.
By providing my students a variety of books on various reading levels, you will make it possible for my students to become fluent readers. You will give them CHOICE, which will make reading interesting and fun! You will help prepare my students for first grade, and life. Thank you! My students need a variety of books on various reading levels. Ms. L.'s Classroom:
