Scoping Out the Crime Scene: We Need a Microscope!

My students need an elementary microscope.

Maggots and blood spatters and skull fragments! My classroom has turned into a crime lab! My students are using science and critical thinking skills to participate in a crime scene investigation and forensics unit. I teach gifted enrichment at four elementary schools in rural Alabama. My schools are low income schools with a large percentage of limited English proficient students. My students are very creative and curious, and I feel very blessed to work with them every day!

This year all Alabama schools are in a state of proration and were last school year as well. This means that teachers are given no funding to buy classroom supplies. Last year, I spent almost $2000 so that my students had the materials and supplies they needed to succeed.

My students are VERY excited about this unit, but the materials we need to conduct the lab experiments are expensive. We desperately need a microscope so that we can look at blood cells to determine blood type, hair samples to determine the hair color of suspects, fiber samples to determine the type of clothing a suspect was wearing, and With these fun, hands on activities, students learn much more than by doing endless worksheets!

Without the generosity of donors like you, my students will not have the materials they need! The difference that previous grants funded by Donors Choose has made in my classroom is amazing! This project will help 123 students at four different schools and will be used in other units and in subsequent years. Will you PLEASE help my little detectives? THANK YOU SO MUCH!
