Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

To quote Willy Wonka, "we are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams." 'What is life with no music,' is the question I often pose to my students. Not only is teaching my passion, but bringing music into the lives of my students, drives me to do what I do everyday. Our school is a Science, Math and Technology Magnet school for grades Pre-k through Fifth. The majority of our students come from high-risk, economically challenged households in our local community. Despite the hardships my students face on a daily basis, I make it my duty to show them the world and all the wonderful possibilities it presents for their lives.

If 'technology is the wave of the future,' my students have yet to catch the wave and are destined for a future that will leave them behind. Unfortunately, in this age of technology, my students have little to no interaction with actively learning with technology on a daily basis. I believe music one of the major driving forces behind this generation, and never before has technology been such a driving force behind music. Although my students have heard of the innovative advances that technology has had in the music industry, they will probably never be afforded the opportunity to use them.

We wish to expand the iMac computers we currently have, into a full music technology lab, complete with iPods to accompany. I would not only like for them to learn how to create projects using essential Apple programs like Garage Band, but I would also like for them to use iPods to create podcasts and video casts that will be broadcast on our website and potentially to our sister school in Chad, Africa. I want them to see an iPod, not only as a source of entertainment, but as a resource for their education.

It is great people like you who let my students know that the world still cares about them and their future. With your help, the completion of our music technology lab will be a goal we can achieve together. You will make it possible for my students to finally catch the wave of the future...TECHNOLOGY.
