Artistic Projections

My students need a projector for the school so that they can better view works of art, films, and other media to further their education.

My students are alternative high school students, who, though they may have faced many troubles such as teen pregnancy, homelessness, or even arrests, have come back to school to finish their high school diploma. We work very hard at this school to prepare the students for the world after high school, providing them with the skills they will need to compete in today's job market. As the only arts teacher at my school, I have had to overcome a number of spacial and materials issues, often getting by on makeshift items. Three classrooms in our school have fixed projectors and we only have one movable projector. This limits the use of media in most of classrooms. Especially in the art classroom, I try to expose the students to as many types of art and artists as possible. At this point I am limited to showing them black and white photo copies, or passing around a book for this students to view artwork.

As the only arts teacher at my school, I have had to overcome a number of spacial and materials issues, often getting by on makeshift items. Especially in the art classroom, I try to expose the students to as many types of art and artists as possible. At this point I am limited to showing them black and white photo copies, or passing around a book for this students to view artwork. This does little justice to the work being shown, and doesn't help the students gain an understanding of all of the variety of images and styles out there. In the past my students have shown great enthusiasm for all types of art, especially Surrealism, but viewing it from a book hardly does it justice.

With a mobile projector I would be able to project images of art in my classroom, helping my students see a variety of styles and mediums. As they view and study these various artists, they begin to develop there own artistic sensibility and begin to create their own style. Being able to express yourself without words has been an invaluable lesson to my students and I would like to further help them along this path. Furthermore, since the projector would be portable, it could be used by other teachers for other classes which would benefit the school as a whole.

Arts education is slowly disappearing in public education at the high school level. At my school, my visual arts class is the only non-core class (i.e. math, science, english). I feel very strongly that the ability to create enhances your ability to learn in all areas. In a hopes to vamp up the arts program at my school, I would like to add a projector to my resources so that I can give my students the best exposure to the arts that I can.
