How hard is it to listen and write down notes when you have trouble multitasking? My 12th grade Civics class deals with this problem, especially the special needs students. My school district is a rural public school that has yet to embrace technology as a learning aid. The focus of this technology would be to engage our special needs students by easing anxiety of note taking during class lectures.

I was once told we don't "multitask", we just switch from task to task quickly. Some people are just quicker than others. This is true when asking students, especially students with learning disabilities, to take notes in class. Do they listen to what is being said? Or do they write down what they see on the board? In either situation, the student misses something. I have witnessed students write down everything that is said in class and miss the lecture because they were too busy writing down "the notes". I want to fill in the blanks.

With the Livescribe Smartpen, special needs students will be able to listen to a lecture and receive the notes later on in the day. An upper level student would use the Smartpen to take their notes and a copy of those notes would be recorded in the pen. Those notes would then be sent down and reviewed by the student and cooperating teacher to reinforce what they heard in class. The opportunity for retention will increase because the student will have covered the two major learning types: visual and audio. Also the student will not have the anxiety of having to pick which one of the learning types they will have to use today, they will receive both.

Your help will ensure that gaps in the learning process are filled. This technology will enable the student to deal with their disabilities in a manner that sets them up for success. Student learning and success in the learning process is all we search for and the Smartpen is just one more piece of that puzzle.
