Wrapped up in Warmth

My students need fabric markers and blanket batting.

Blanket hugs to you, from my class! I teach 7th & 8th grade Family & Consumer Science classes in a public school district. While we have a low poverty population, we understand that not all students are as well off as we are, and we want to help.

Many students across the United States go without on a daily basis. One of those needs is for warmth in the winter time. While our population is not in a high need community, kids are never to learn about the power of giving, and about the world outside of their iPods. During a discussion on fabric and its many uses, we talked about clothes and blankets, and the type of warmth they provide. My class wanted to make blankets for charity, but like all schools, budgets limit us on our spending for supplies to complete projects like this.

Let's face it, the base lessons are those that incorporate learning skills, and applying them at the same time. That is exactly what we want to do in our class. Students will learn about fabric print design, and create their own pieces with the markers. Each student can then take the fabric, and use it to create a quilt for charity. Each student must complete one blanket before the end of the semester. They will apply what they learned about design, as well as demonstrate sewing skills developed throughout the semester. I can provide the fabric, but I would need help with the rest. Kids need markers to create their design, and quilt batting to help make the quilts warm.

No child should ever go cold. My students want the opportunity to make sure that this doesn't happen. By providing us with these few basic supplies, they can learn the class curriculum, have fun, and give back to the community all at the same time. By developing stronger community and volunteer awareness now, these kids will have a promising start to a fulfilling future!
