My students need one pedometer each for a classroom of 25 students.

I teach Physical Education in an inner city high school in a high-need community. I teach 9-12 grades but in this class I teach 9th graders for the most part. These children have weight and nutritional challenges. They often give back to the community as you can see in this picture. They are creating a mural for a local day care facility at the large teaching hospital nearby.

We have ZERO budget for PE supplies. I have been teaching this class at the local YMCA, which helps us with space since we have no gym. We are working on nutrition and weight as a focus and would like the pedometers to help us keep track of how we are doing. We exercise daily and keep track of our nutritional intake. Now we need a measuring tool.

The students will each get one of the pedometers to wear and show at the end of each day. We will try to get to the 10,000 step mark and adding that to the nutritional changes and the aerobics we do in class, we would like to see some results.

Your help with this project will enable these - often very visual learners- to see how they are doing and compare. We will keep charts of the steps and measure our successes in the happy faces. I cannot do this project as effectively without this tool. However, I will do the unit anyway, as always, knowing the motivational piece will be missing. This is a group of students many of whom are the first in their families to graduate from high school and to go to college. A nutritional/exercise-life long learning based PE like this can benefit them their whole lives, in college and beyond.
