Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need creative ways to express themselves that are safe and productive. I work in a substantially separate special education program for children in grades 1-5, who have significant emotional and behavioral disabilities.
My students are prone to violent, destructive behaviors when they are frustrated, angry, or upset. I am always looking for ways to channel my students' energy and amazing potential by tapping into their interests. So many of my students LOVE music, and as a musician myself, I know the increase in self esteem and joy that accompany music making.
I work with 35+ students who love making music, and we currently have one broken keyboard. My students know I play guitar, and are constantly asking me if we could get one in the school for them to play with. It's amazing to watch my students, many with diagnoses of ADD/ADHD, sit at the keyboard(when it was in better shape) for 20-30 minutes and write their own melodies, play along to songs, and experiment with sound. These are children who often find it difficult to attend for 5 minutes in other settings.
The students I work with often come from very difficult home situations, and many come to us with a history full of trauma. Your gift of these instruments will show these children that they are valuable, creative, talented people. Thank you!
