"Books on tape for listening center

I teach 5-K in a very rural South Carolina community. The school has a 93% Free/Reduced Lunch ratio and is also known as a school in the "Corridor of Shame".

This school year we have faced drastic budget cuts. There is no money for anything "extra". We are making due with what we have however my students this year love story time. They are engaged in every word of the book. I believe a listening center would be beneficial. I have the headphones and cassette player but I need books on tape to complete the center.

I, just like so many others have had to deal with budget cuts this year. I purchased a listening center for my students but have very few books in the center. There is no money this year for something like this, however I have a class that loves story time! They are attentive and inquisitive. They are engaged throughout the book and only desire more. I really feel that this class would thrive with adequate beginning books on tape. I would use these materials as a center activity that the students could enjoy.

These students have already faced so many hardships. I have found something that they love. When I read to them they get lost in the book. During story time it doesn't matter that "mommy called the police on daddy last night" or "we didn't eat dinner because there's no food in the house". The kids get to forget about reality for a few minutes and enjoy a fairy tale. Thanks for all your help!

My students need 2 sets of cassette read-alongs.

Dear Trisha, Ginny and Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation,
You have truly blessed our class with your generosity. We received the books on tape last week. As I opened the package I explained to the students what was inside the box and how this box got to our classroom. I told them how you gave so that we would have a fun listening center. I took out each book and showed all 22 each new fantastic story that we would soon read. They "ooohhhed" and "aahhed", giggled and laughed.
I set up the listening center right away. I rotated 4 students in and and out showing each how to take care of the books and how to work the tape player. Immediately they were engrossed with 'The Three Bears". I never heard a peep. They carefully followed along and turned each page gently. Every once in a while I'd hear a sweet giggle.
Again, thank you for seeing a need and providing. We've only made it through 1 book but thanks to you we have about 9 more to explore. I know this will be a very popular center all year long.

With gratitude,
Mrs. T.

Dear Trisha, Ginny and Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation,

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your generosity. The "Listen and Learn" project will not only be used by the 20 students I have now, but will be used for years to come.

The items you have funded will allow my students to independently read along with an array of picture books. This will stimulate their imaginations and build primary reading skills.

Thank you so much. I can't wait for the students to see the new listening center!

With gratitude,
Mrs. T.
