Prepare High-Risk Students For College!

My students need 45 AP study books to prepare them for the national exam in May!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach AP World History, a college-level course, to 15-yr old tenth graders. Most of our students are low-income, minority teens who will be the first in their family to go to college. This is a high risk neighborhood with graduation rates below the average of most other high schools. However, we have some very motivated and goal-driven students in our AP classes. They’ve shown a strong desire to succeed in this class and go on to college.

Last year’s students proved that they can conquer the odds as they exceeded the national average pass rate on the AP exam for their demographic. In fact, they improved on scores by 1000% from the year prior! That was made possible in part by donations from generous citizens through Donorschoose. However, most of our students cannot afford certain helpful, (almost essential) supplemental materials.

This year, in order to improve on last year’s success, we need AP study books for our students. AP study books are common in all AP classes, and they are highly recommended by most AP teachers. Studies show that students perform markedly better on AP exams if they have also utilized resources like AP study books. In addition, we have a significant number of students who do not speak English as their first language. Reading the college-level textbook may be overwhelming for some students and an AP study book would be a great solution.

We don’t just want our students to GO to college. We want our students to be prepared in order to succeed in college. By donating to this project, you will be empowering underprivileged teenagers to succeed in college. Most of these students would otherwise not even be going to college. Let’s help them be excellent!
