"Let's give P.S. 50Q Talfourd Lawn Elementary School students the chance to become art connoisseurs by reading and learning about art history and the fantastic artists that have changed the way the world thinks through their expression. I've noticed that students, when asked about their favorite rap artist, are able to respond immediately. But when they are asked who their favorite fine artist painter is, they hesitate and many times do not have an answer.
My goal for the 2009-2010 school year as the Art Teacher for the upper grades is to use Scholastic Art Magazine along with the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the NYS Standards to introduce the world of art to students so that they can participate in arts-making, literacy in the arts, making connections, community and cultural resources and careers and life-long learning. Unfortunately, we will not have an art room this year due to the fact the school needs to convert the art room into a classroom to service the community, therefore I will be teaching "Art on a Cart." I will be serving the entire 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes pushing in from room to room. I would like to have as many resources as possible on my cart that are available to my students. I am asking for 30 copies of Scholastic Art so that students can work in a partnership. I will use these issues as part of "Literacy in the Arts" and "Arts Making." Looking at the magazine's editorial calendar, the students will have a range of experiences from reading this source material. Last year I arranged 8 field trips for the 5th grade. This year I intend to arrange field trips to the great art museums of New York City to enhance what we are learning and seeing visually in Scholastic Art.
Thank you again for supporting DonorsChoose.org. I am a previous grant recipient and I am so appreciative of how DonorsChoose is able to connect donors with classroom teachers! It really makes a difference and shows the children there are people out there that care about them. HIDE My students need 30 copies of Scholastic Art.
