As a very high energy high school Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, I believe students need to learn life skills for the future. This could be anything from balancing the checkbook, learning the importance of eating one's fruits and vegetables to parenting skills. All of these skills will guide students along in their journey called life.

In Family and Consumer Sciences, one of our areas of study is Parenting and Child Development. This is a very important subject because most of the students will be or currently are parents. When students sign-up for this class they think it is all about is taking home the "baby." In which, they are referring to the "Baby-Think-It-Over." Or they might say, "are we getting to wear the 'belly?'" When they say that, they are referring to the empathy belly. Actually, there is more to this class than just taking home the baby and wearing the belly. How about learning about parenting styles or one's family form? One can't even have a baby without experiencing or learning about prenatal development? With that in mind, prenatal stage of development could be thought up as one of the most important times in one's life. This is the stage in the fetus's life in which one is growing and maturing before birth. Considering this, students need to have an idea about what is going to take place during this exciting time in a woman's life.

When studying prenatal development in a fetus, it is so helpful to have pictures and if possible, models for the students to see and hold. By having pictures or models, students understand the concepts better. The models that I believe are beneficial to my classroom are the uterus/fetus set. These models give the students a lifelike uterus/fetus model that illustrates 8, 10, 16, 22, 40 weeks of pregnancy. With these models the students have a better idea of the stages of development of the fetus and mother. In turn, students will have an understanding of the growth and development process during prenatal development.

Today's students are the future parents. Please help the students realize that the future is in their hands! With the help of this set, the students will understand about the growth of our tomorrow... today...
