This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Students are below reading-level because they don't read enough. I teach 11th grade English in Mississippi in an impoverished region where where students are below grade-level readers not because they can't, but because they grow up not reading.
My students only like to read stories that interest them. Traditional, canonical stories don't interest them as much as stories written by and about African Americans.
I need a class set of books that my kids would like to read. If they have an interesting book, they will read it and want to talk about it. I want my students to read the book "Things Fall Apart" because they will be interested in this book based on our conversations and how they felt about other texts we have read. They also want fun, hands-on activities to accompany the texts, which is why we need markers.
Your help will motivate reluctant readers to read on their own by showing them that reading can be fun and educational.
