Operation H.E.R.O. (Helping Everyone Read Often) Program

I am a fifth grade teacher in a highly gifted classroom. I am the only classroom in our grade level where all of my students are in the advanced level range.

Although my students are gifted, many do not possess that love for reading which is so important to their future success. Of the 25 students that I have this year, roughly half earned 100 or more Accelerated Reader points last year. Statistics have shown it is much more difficult to show achievement gains in gifted children. Therefore, I am trying to think "out of the box" in order to give my students the opportunity to advance their literacy skills.

In order to increase student motivation for reading, I have created the H.E.R.O. Reading Program. It is an acronym that stands for "Helping Everyone Read Often." This is a project where students are motivated to pursue a passion for reading. I have built up a moderately varied classroom library, but I do not have any books on tape for our HERO Listening Center. I would love to institute a listening center where students can listen to their favorite books on tape, which I also believe will aid in their love for literature as well. The Accelerated Reader Program will be utilized to gather data and track progress from each student. Each student will be given a goal of achieving a minimum of 100 Accelerated Reader points throughout the year. With the HERO reading program in place, students will develop a life-long love for the art of reading.

By contributing to the HERO Reading Program, you will have played an integral part in helping a child develop a love for the art of reading both in and out of the classroom. You can turn a student into a SUPERHERO Reader, and they are destined for success because of your generous donation.
