My students need a class set of 30 subscriptions to "Current Events Magazine" by Weekly Reader.

Sixth grade students could have the world by the tail! They have a bright future and as their teacher I hope that they will make a positive impact on the world. I teach 100, sixth grade students global studies. Each year students do several independent research projects culminating in the final year end project. Increased time spent on student-centered learning projects has been our goal. Teacher directed learning is an important part of their instruction but the most memorable and meaningful lessons have come from their own discoveries and written work.

Students truly "wonder about the world." They are interested in world culture, news, and events. We are greatly lacking in resources about current events. A large obstacle blocking our path to increased student-centered learning and world knowledge has been a lack of research materials written at the 6th grade reading level. Sixth grade curriculum has changed. The state benchmarks now include a "capstone research project" that includes examining a current world problem and posing a solution.

The "Weekly Reader; Current Events" magazine subscription would fit well in our studies. Also, it is a good research tool for the capstone projects. "Current Events Magazine" includes in-depth, late-breaking coverage of national and world news stories written in grade-appropriate language. Having this resource in our classroom will support student research and world knowledge which benefits my students and will increase their global awareness. One class set, a subscription for 30 students will serve 100 students throughout the day.

A donation will help answer students questions as they wonder about the world. A sixth grade student who knows about the world begins to care about it. If information about world culture and history is presented along with current news the learning becomes relevant. Students learning about a problem are more willing to find solutions. By donating a subscription to "Current Events Magazine" the donor will be part of the chain of increased cultural awareness, interest and most importantly involvement. Students will begin thinking about and working toward solutions by starting with the magazine as a tool in their research.
