"We work hard to teach them how to read, now we need you to help them learn to LOVE reading! I team teach a multi-age second and third grade class. Our students are mostly English language learners; half are bilingual learners in Spanish. Our school is the highest poverty school in our district. We need to instill in our students a real passion for reading. They face the challenge of learning to read in a second language, or even in two languages. Many of them have no books at home. We've worked to build up our classroom library to ensure that our students have access to many high-quality, highly engaging books. Unfortunately, laying on the tile floor or sitting on hard plastic chairs is not very conducive to reading for long spans of time. School is where we need to make reading come alive! Your generous donation for our project will give our students a comfortable place to read and talk about books with their classmates. As the kids have more engaging experiences with books, they'll want to take full advantage of every chance they get to read! Fostering that "reading spark" will promote more proficient readers and life-long learners.
My students need 6 bean bag chairs.

Dear Dan, Jen & Megan, Claire Hammer, Marcey, Lauren, Susan , Wendy, Kelly, Beth, Kate, David and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for your donations that helped us get our bean bag chairs. The students were so excited when they saw them! We knew that the students would enjoy using the bean bag chairs, but we never imagined the results we have seen so far. Students are highly engaged in reading. Each student is reading on his or her own for a 20-45 minute block each day. They even ask to do independent reading outside of our language arts block. That has almost never happened before. In addition to all of the additional sustained reading they are engaged in, the bean bags have had a positive social impact on the students. As you can see in the photos we posted, students are sharing the chairs without conflict. We've seen up to 6 children peacefully sharing one chair. There are not many things that 6 second and third graders can share without arguing. I have told as many people as I can about donorschoose.org and about what a great experience it has been for us. Thank you again for your generous help with our project! With gratitude, Mrs. M.

Dear Dan, Jen & Megan, Claire Hammer, Marcey, Lauren, Susan , Wendy, Kelly, Beth, Kate, David and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for your generosity in funding our bean bag chair project. The non-consumable nature of this project means our students will be impacted for many years to come. We are planning to use the bean bags for independent reading time and for book groups. Small groups of students will be able to sit comfortably together to discuss the plot and characters of the books they are reading, just like an adult book group would. I am confident that having a comfortable place to read will grow our students' love of reading while it develops the important reader trait of stamina. Thank you again for your generous support of literacy education! With gratitude, Mrs. M.
