I teach Language Arts to urban sixth graders in a struggling Title I school. Our school did not meet the AYP last year. The kids are curious, and given support and supplies, they can improve
Many of my students read a full two years below grade level. They don't have books at home and it is difficult for sixth graders to get to public libraries on mass transit in the City.
I need books for a classroom library in order to engage students with daily reading practice. I give them 15 minutes of reading time each day, and it is important for them to have a variety of engaging options for self-selected texts. I have chosen classics by authors such as E.B. White, Walter Dean Myers, and Judy Blume. I have included books about famous African Americans, and 5 subscriptions to Time Magazine for Kids.
These materials will not only give the kids more choices during reading time, but they will give me more flexibility to set up reading groups, discussion groups, and projects centered around famous figures and current events. All of these activities can help engage my sixth graders and get them to their reading level. Furthermore, our school requires 6th graders to read 25 books outside of class per year, and to write book reports for each title. I need books in my room which the children can borrow for these reports.
You will help get my students to their grade-level reading skills and beyond! I can't tell you how much morale improves when a class receives donated supplies. The excitement generated by simply opening the boxes gets kids engaged in reading!
