"Hello Drama Kings and Queens of 2nd grade!
Please help my English Language Learner (ELL) students develop their English skills and relate to historical persons, events and people in their community.
I work in an inner city school. Most of our students live in high poverty and do not speak English, so they often struggle academically. Our school has a 90 percent free and reduced lunch population. The crime rate of our school's Zip code is one of the highest in the state. Despite the situations the children are living in, I see their huge potential! My students are wonderful, exciting, and delightful. To help with their English language development I need varied resources and materials in my classroom. Drama infusion is a research based teaching method that has been proven to be very successful cross curriculum. Due to budget cuts our district has no money for extra materials.
I have requested some costumes and puppets that will benefit my students. Along with various other items such as biographical costumes and historical regalia, I feel the children can make people in history and their community come alive. Since many of my students have limited life experiences they can connect more rapidly with this visual dramatic teaching technique. Some English Language Learners, for various reasons, choose not to speak when they are first learning a new language but tend to do so through puppets. Students will not develop the language unless they use it. Puppets become a vital trick ELL teachers need to help their students achieve success.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart and my students success for your kind donation. These children are the future of my state. They have such a difficult time in school and the drop out rates are high in my district. I am on a quest to change this alarming statistic and reality. I want to foster the love of learning in all of their smiling faces! My strongest desire is to see all of them grow up to continue their education and receive every success they deserve despite the situations they are currently living in.
My students need animal costumes, career costumes and puppets.

Dear Susan, Michael, Bill, charmaine, Sarah and Anonymous Donor,
I can not thank you enough for your kind donation. I am so excited! I can't wait to see the smiling faces on my students tomorrow when they hear about the new resources our classroom will be receiving. Your commitment to children is appreciated. These materials will help my ELL students find academic success despite their language struggles. I thank you again and wish you all the healthiest, happiest, and peaceful holiday season. I will be sending you pictures of the students actively engaged with the tools you made possible. I look forward to the time when I can share these photos with you along with student thank you letters. Again thank you from 23 grateful members of our classroom community.
